Technology Description:

ATD will integrate their system to existing installed processes with the goal of reducing fresh water consumption by up to 70% and capturing virtually all solids in the form of cake or bedding for use or sale off-site.  A by-product of that is a concentrated stream of dissolved nutrients taken from the water that will reduce lagoon contents and subsequent application costs by up to 70% as well or sold off-site.

Technology Strengths,Weaknesses and Critical Indicators

Ultra-Filtration (UF) Membrane Based Nutrient Removal technologies can be used to reduce both suspended and dissolved solids depending on location specific requirements:

  • Produces low nutrient irrigation water and marketable products when paired with other technologies
  • Always produce a stream leaving membrane and stream rejected by membrane
  • Membranes of various size: Micro-filtration, Ultra-Filtration and Nano-Filtration each allowing various sized particles through the membrane
  • Depending on the membrane, effective pre-treatment to remove coarse, fibrous solids as well as fine suspended solids are important to system viability and reliability
  • Membrane failure and high pressure/energy costs can be a concern
  • Proven technology for nitrogen recovery, phosphorous recovery, and pathogen reduction.

Membrane Based Nutrient Removal technologies:

  • Produces recycled water and marketable products when paired with other technologies
  • Always produce a stream leaving membrane and stream rejected by membrane
  • Membranes of various size: Microfiltration, Ultrafiltration and Reverse Osmosis—each allowing various sized particles through the membrane
  • Reverse Osmosis required to remove salts and achieve water suitable for discharge
  • Effective pre-treatment to remove coarse, fibrous solids as well as fine suspended solids are important to system viability and reliability
  • Membrane failure and high pressure/energy costs can be a concern

 

As Newtrient has communicated with ATD regarding their manure management system and they have indicated that their systems provide opportunities in the following situations: 

  • in cases where water shortage is a problem
  • In cases where land shortage is a problem
  • In cases where nutrient overload is a problem
  • Selling solids and nutrients off-site could open the door to increased herds on the same land base
  • Reduced environmental demand could improve long-term sustainability and legacy value of the farm

 

Newtrient will continue to work with ATD to further refine the cost and performance information as more information comes in with new commercial dairy installations.

 

ATD has not been evaluated using Newtrient's 9-point scoring process because, they are in the process of developing their first dairy based project.
