Gemidan Ecogi A/S is 100% owned by the Gemidan Group, a leading Danish waste management company, established in 1988.
KomTek started the development of the Ecogy technology in 2009 envisioning to develop a new pre-treatment technology to process source separated food waste and produce a high-quality pulp-based substrate for conversion into renewable energy using anaerobic digestion. Blending food waste with manure increases the biogas yield in anaerobic digestion and is a common practice in Denmark.
Gemidan Ecogi now markets the Ecogi technology. They opened their first large-scale commercial plant in Denmark in 2018 and will soon add a second plant to its portfolio.
Gemidan Ecogi undertakes all phases of production, including, design, delivery and operation and maintenance of complete plants.
The Ecogi technology separates the organic and non-organic fractions in packaged food waste. The organic fraction turns into a bio pulp for use in anaerobic digestion. Gemidan Ecogi continuously monitors the quality of the pulp through laboratory testing and analysis ensuring the bio-pulp is free of plastic, metals and other non-organic fractions. This yields fast reaction in the digester. Gemidan Ecogi guarantees a 99.9% pure bio-pulp with >95% recovery of the organic fraction.
While continuous monitoring ensures optimum utilization of the organic residues and high degree of fineness in the pulp, it also enhances the nutrient content of the digestate. Digestate can be used as fertilizer or bedding on the farm. The Ecogy technology has a flexible and robust design and is able to withstand highly challenging and diverse waste streams.
Gemidan Ecogi is part of a Biogas Alliance led by the Danish Trade Council in North America.
Technology Strengths,Weaknesses and Critical Indicators
Anaerobic Digester Associated Technology:
NOTE: There are several technology types that are used as part of an integrated manure management system that includes an anaerobic digester and are not applicable to manure management in other cases. The impact of these technologies on the critical indicators are represented as those of an entire anaerobic digester system.
- Long usable life and can be run reliably
- Creates energy and generates environmental credits
- Requires proper preparation of the feedstock
- Requires other technologies for energy utilization
- Requires other technologies for digestate handling
- Proper feeding & system monitoring is required to avoid system downtime
- Proven technology for odor control, GHG reduction and pathogen reduction
Gemidan Ecogi has not been evaluated using Newtrient's 9-point scoring process because they do not have an installation in North America at this time. Gemidan Ecogi is interested in entering U.S. markets and is being assisted by the Danish Trade Council.
Newtrient will continue to work with Gemidan Ecogi and the Danish Trade Council to provide more information of this technology as it becomes available.
