Technology Description:

In partnership with dairy farmers or other commercial facilities, Maas Energy Works specializes in developing, owning, and operating anaerobic manure digesters. Daryl Maas, president of Maas Energy Works, has learned about digesters not by selling them to others, but by building, owning, and operating them himself. Maas got started in cow power in Washington State with his brother Kevin. Together they built five operational digesters in Oregon and Washington as Farm Power Northwest, founded in 2007 and going strong today. In 2010, Maas continued to expand by bringing Maas Energy Works to California in order to explore the large renewable sector growth there. Today the company develops, builds, operates, and improves biogas projects all across the state.

Maas Energy has made significant inroads in California by providing the dairies there with a manure management system based on covered lagoon digesters. The systems have been installed with engine generators for electrical production and they have a digester cluster project near Pixley, California that will bring together 11 digesters in a cluster to upgrade the biogas to pipeline standards and inject it into the natural gas grid as renewable natural gas.

Maas Energy has been awarded multiple grants by the California Department of Food and Agriculture and currently has 14 operating digesters and 38 projects under development.
