Technology Description:

The Trident Nutrient Recovery System is an integrated turn-key solution that allows farmers to processes their livestock manure into valuable components like concentrated nutrients, coarse fiber and water. The system is based on a modular design and fully scalable (250 to more than 15,000 cows).

Trident’s Nutrient Recovery System provides a comprehensive value-driven solution that is easy to manage and operate. The proprietary multi-step process incorporates mechanical and chemical components, specifically designed for agricultural applications. The system can be implemented on farms with or without an anaerobic digester (AD). What is referred to as the Trident Cold Process is a specific system configuration for farms without AD, allowing operators to effectively process undigested manure.

Once manure goes through the Trident Nutrient Recovery System, it is processed into concentrated nutrients, water and fiber; generating savings potential and new revenue opportunities for the farm.

The first stage separation includes the feedstock conditioning and extraction of coarse fiber, which is made available for reuse as bedding or for land application. During the second stage separation the nutrients are concentrated and dewatered allowing better storage, precision land application or further processing to fertilizer granules. The recovery rates are 85% Phosphorus (P), 55% Nitrogen (N), 20% Potassium (K) of the original feedstock. The remaining effluent water (1% TS) is reused as operational water or for irrigation (e.g. pivot system).

The technology is provided as a turn-key system including pumps, conveyor, stainless steel platform, PLC and operator training. The system is fully automated allowing smooth operation with minimal operator attendance. It can be monitored and controlled remotely by the farm’s operator or the Trident Technical Support team.

Technology Strengths,Weaknesses and Critical Indicators

Chemical flocculation technologies remove the non-dissolved particles from the waste stream typically resulting in irrigation quality “tea water”:

  • Produces a clay like cake which is high in phosphorus and with significant amounts of organic nitrogen.
  • Technologies include belt presses, centrifuges, dissolved air flotation systems and others all of these technologies require flocculants to achieve high rates of solids removal
  • There is significant variation of chemical and energy use depending on site and by technology
  • There is significant variation of operational intensity depending on site and by technology
  • There is significant variation of cost depending on site and by technology
  • Proven technology for nitrogen recovery, phosphorous recovery, storage reduction, GHG reduction, and odor control

Newtrient Comments/Opinions:

Suspended solids/phosphorus recovery technologies:

  • Produces a concentrated source of phosphorus from a renewable source
  • Include belt presses, centrifuges, dissolved air flotation systems and others
  • There is significant variation of chemical and energy use by site and by technology
  • There is significant variation of operational intensity by site and by technology
  • There is significant variation of cost by site and by technology

Trident has a sound history of performance and reliability in manure related technology. They have developed a system of solids separation followed by traditional dissolved air flotation for application to dairy manure and dairy manure digestate. One of the key selling points for one purchaser was that the system was installed by Trident "on time and at the quoted price".

The system, installed at commercial scale on several dairies and co-digestion facilities, has not yet achieved a level of market penetration that would allow it to be called a common approach. Although still relatively new to the market, Trident has supplied Newtrient with considerable data and access to the sites running the system. By all indications, and the reports of the operating farms, the early results are pointing to a successful and robust technology capable of meeting performance expectations in regard to solids, phosphorus, and nitrogen removal while producing a stackable product at a few cents per cow per day on most systems.

Newtrient will continue to work with Trident to further refine the cost and performance information as more information comes in with both new installations and increased time of operation.
