Overall Summary

Primary Application

  • Consultants, Developers and Service Providers can be an integral part of a project team
  • Generally used to provide specific expertise or to reduce the responsibility or risk for specific parts of a project

Economic/Return on Investment Considerations

  • Consultants, Developers and Service Providers may affect the economics of a project in many ways. By providing key expert advice Consultants can shorten project development time and reduce costly errors, Developers can provide funding and bring value by leveraging their expertise and relationships, Service Providers can assume day to day responsibility for certain aspects of a project that are not within the available time or expertise of the dairymen.
  • The selection of the wrong Consultants, Developers and Service Providers may negatively affect the economics of a project by adding costs and reducing the projects ability to make changes if needed

Industry Uptake

  • Most projects have at least some Consultants, Developers and Service Providers.

Technology Maturity

  • Consultants, Developers and Service Providers are available in almost every field and in every area, the key is to identify those with a proven track record.

Primary Benefits

  • Consultants, Developers and Service Providers provide specific expertise or reduce the responsibility or risk for specific parts of a project

Secondary Benefits

  • Because of their previous experience they often can draw on other resources to assist when the inevitable problems arise

How it Works

  • Consultants are generally hired by the project to oversee or advise in a specific area of expertise (i.e. permitting, construction, troubleshooting or operations).
  • Developers usually are responsible for a project located on a farm and take responsibility for the entire project. In some cases, the developer is entirely responsible for all aspects of the project and in others the responsibilities are distributed.
  • Service Providers typically provide services in an area of expertise. In many case projects see better up-time and production when they are operated by someone with no other responsibilities on the dairy

Pre-treatment and/or Post-treatment Required

  • Prequalifying the Consultants, Developers and Service Providers involved with your project is very important. Many of these people will be part of the project for years to come.
  • Good contracts with clearly defined responsibilities and clauses for resolving disputes or terminating the relationship are recommended for all Consultants, Developers and Service Providers

Limitations

  • No Consultant, Developer or Service Providers can make a bad project successful and no matter how good the team, if the process is not designed well and constructed properly there will be little that can be done after the fact.

Other Considerations

  • Many times, dairymen are approached by Consultants, Developers and Service Providers offering their services, it is always in the best interest of the person who is making the decision of entering a relationship to take all the time needed to carefully vet and evaluate their options before entering into a contract.
