EPA, USDA Encourage Use of Market-based and Other Collaborative Approaches to Address Excess Nutrients

Posted December 5, 2018 by Jamie jvandermolen

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) released a joint letter to state environmental and agricultural agencies actively voicing support for collaborative, market-based approaches to reduce nutrient overloading and improve waterways.

The joint announcement encourages rational programs that benefit the public, environment, economy and farmers. This is a tremendous opportunity for dairy to pursue creative, incentive-based and voluntary programs that help close the gap between what farms can do and what they can afford to do.

Newtrient continues to work for dairy farmers by accelerating the adoption of market-based solutions that deliver economic value to taxpayers, municipalities, states, farmers and companies and environmental benefits sought by all.

“Across the country, farmers are leading the way toward improved water quality by taking steps to decrease sedimentation and nutrient runoff from agricultural lands. But we know more can be done, and continue to look for partners to pursue innovative, market-based, and voluntary approaches that lead to cleaner water and a healthier agricultural sector.”
– Bill Northey, Under Secretary for USDA Farm Production and Conservation
