About the Company:

Clarke Energy, a KOHLER Company, is a multi-award-winning global business specializing in the engineering, installation and maintenance of distributed power generation solutions. Clarke Energy provides distributed power plant solutions with market leading engineering, installation and maintenance support.

Their specialty is gas engine power stations and combined heat and power technology. They have expanded this offering to incorporate additional and complimentary renewable energy generation and storage technologies as hybrids or microgrids. They also offer biogas upgrading solutions for gas grid injection.

Clarke Energy’s goal is to maximize return on investment for their customers while reducing their projects risk.

About the Solution:

Clarke Energy is an authorized distributor and service provider for Techno Project Industriale’s (TPI’s) biogas upgrading plants. These include both membrane and selective solvent-based washing systems.

With Clarke Energy’s engineering, procurement, construction and aftersales support capabilities we are able to offer full biogas upgrading solutions to our customers along with integration to their sites.

Biogas upgrading is the process of the separation of methane from the carbon dioxide and other gases from biogas. The concentrated biogas – close to 100% methane is called ‘biomethane’ or ‘renewable natural gas’ (RNG). This gas can be used as a vehicle fuel or injected into the gas distribution network.

Biogas upgrading technology can be applied to anaerobic digesters, wastewater treatment facilities and landfill sites. Biogas upgrading can be used as a substitute technology to gas engines or can be used in parallel where power and heat are required on site.

TPI is an authorized supplier of Evonik’s Sepuran ® Ultra-high selectivity polymeric refinement membranes (HPSM). TPI’s combines this technology with well-engineered balance of plant including quality containers and control systems.

The HPSM plants developed and industrialized by TPI make it possible to obtain high levels of purity with recovery efficiency in excess of 99%, thus making the pure biomethane suitable for distribution in national gas networks or for use as a vehicle fuel.

Solution Strengths, Weaknesses and Critical Indicators

Anaerobic Digester Associated Technology:

NOTE: There are several technology types that are used as part of an integrated manure management system that includes an anaerobic digester and are not applicable to manure management in other cases. The impact of these technologies on the critical indicators are represented as those of an entire anaerobic digester system.

  • Long usable life and can be run reliably
  • Creates energy and generates environmental credits
  • Requires proper preparation of the feedstock
  • Requires other technologies for energy utilization
  • Requires other technologies for digestate handling
  • Proper feeding & system monitoring is required to avoid system downtime
  • Proven technology for odor control, GHG reduction and pathogen reduction
