SMART SOLUTIONS FOR WASTEWATER AND AIR EMIISSIONS

About the Company:

Condorchem Envitech is an environmental engineering firm providing water, effluent and air emissions treatment solutions for a wide range of industrial activities.

They provide comprehensive environmental project solutions, from analysis, planning, design to construction, installation and maintenance of treatment plants.

Working as integrators, Condorchem always implements the appropriate available technologies to ensure that clients are always offered the most effective solution for their specific needs. With a comprehensive research and development team, creativity and innovation are key to the several hundred references worldwide and future capabilities.

About the Solution:

Condorchem design and install wastewater treatment plants and air treatment plants using the best available technologies, creativity and constant research into new technologies and treatment methods, along with twenty five years of engineering and design know how.

Within the area of water treatment, they are specialists in concentration technologies; evaporation and crystallization.  The niche of Condorchem lies in utilizing these technologies in conjunction with complimentary treatment processes, to create a solution to achieve Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) where possible.

The motivation is always to find the best solution environmentally and financially (with return of investments that can potentially be achieved in just one year or less)

Technologies for achieving ZLD include Vacuum Evaporation, Crystallization, Membrane Distillation, Atmospheric Evaporation and Evapoxidation.

Within the agricultural sector, this evaporation equipment can be used to treat liquid digestate from farm waste to produce organic fertilizer and water for irrigation. See “Manurtech” for the full description of the process co-designed by Condorchem and two other specialist engineering companies, specifically formulated for agricultural waste.

Solution Strengths, Weaknesses and Critical Indicators

Evaporation Technologies:

  • Use heat to produce either manure with less water or dried manure solids
  • Reduce water in manure using a series of evaporators or recompressed process generated steam to evaporate water from liquid slurries—energy is supplied either by purchased fuel and/or waste heat from other processes
  • Systems that dry separated solids use either a belt or drum to evaporate water from separated solids—energy is supplied either by purchased fuel, electricity and/or waste heat from other processes
  • Compounds are released as the water is driven off (i.e. ammonia, hydrogen sulfide), this often requires additional treatment such as condensation of the water and/or scrubbing of the chemicals
  • Requires purchased energy and costs are a significant concern leading to a trade-off between input costs and gains in liquid concentration and transportation/market of by-products
  • Proven technology for nitrogen recovery, phosphorous recovery, storage reduction, GHG reduction, odor control and pathogen reduction

Newtrient Comments/Opinions:

Evaporation and Drying Technologies:

  • Uses heat to produce either manure with less water or dried manure solids
  • Systems that reduce water in manure use a series of evaporators to sequentially evaporate water from liquid slurries—energy is supplied either by purchased fuel and/or waste heat from other processes
  • Systems that dry separated solids use either a belt or drum to evaporate water from separated solids—energy is supplied either by purchased fuel, electricity and/or waste heat from other processes
  • Chemicals are released with the water (i.e. ammonia, hydrogen sulfide), and this often requires additional treatment such as condensation of the water and/or scrubbing of the chemicals
  • The requirement for purchased energy and costs are a significant concern leading to a tradeoff between input costs and gains in liquid concentration and transportation/market of by-products
CondorChem is currently working with two other partners through Manurtech to bring effective and efficient solutions to the agricultural sector. This work has primarily been done targeting the poultry sector but they are now reaching out to the dairy and pork industries as well. See the entry under Manurtech for more information on this integrated solution.

Newtrient has had several conversations with CondorChem, and will continue to work with them to further refine the cost and performance information as more information comes in with new commercial dairy installations. The CondorChem system has not been evaluated using Newtrient's 9-point scoring process because, although their process appears to be suited for use on dairy manure, Newtrient is not aware of any current dairy based projects in North America.
