FAN Separator – Bedding Recovery System

The Pioneer in Separation Technology

About the Company:

FAN Separator is a traditional, European company carrying out business worldwide. FAN designs and manufactures according to strict European standards, thus ensuring the highest quality down to the smallest detail. Our aim is leadership in quality in the areas of separation and slurry technology as well as waste water management in the non-agricultural sector. For this reason FAN works to produce sustainable and economic solutions. FAN is dedicated to a modern conservation of values and FAN’s mission is at the same time FAN’s highest requirement: FAN wants satisfied customers. Worldwide.

About the Solution:

As the costs for high quality bedding material have extremely risen in the last few years more and more innovative milk farms use bio bedding material. This is made of the undigested fibers (feed remains) of the slurry. The BRU concept (Bedding Recovery Unit) developed by FAN, a daughter of the Austrian company Bauer specialized in environmental technology, separates, dries and disinfects undigested raw fibers of slurry. This way costs can be reduced and at the same time the milk production is optimized. As this is an ecologic cycle not only the costs for bedding material but also disposal costs can be saved. This biological material is produced directly on the Farm and always available.

Solution Strengths, Weaknesses and Critical Indicators

Bedding Recovery Systems:

  • Conditions coarse manure fiber to improve the bedding characteristics
  • Most utilize in-vessel composter technology
  • Provides bacterial kill and material drying
  • Recovered manure solids require more bedding management than other high-quality bedding materials
  • Proven technology for storage reduction, odor control and pathogen reduction
  • This technology loses nitrogen to the atmosphere in the form of ammonia gas

The FAN Bedding Recovery Unit (BRU) conditions coarse, undigested manure fibers recovered from a screw press separator to improve the bedding characteristics.  FAN has installed numerous systems on dairy farms around the U.S.  Successful users of recovered manure solids often add fresh bedding daily and rake the freestall frequently to maintain cow comfort and animal health.

At one dairy visited by Newtrient they have simplified their manure management strategy, creating a cost savings of ~$120,000/year by avoiding bedding purchase and sand removal from storage and giving them not only their bedding needs, but an additional income opportunity for the excess recovered bedding. They estimate that capital expenditure for the technology has a six year payback based on the net cost savings (no fiber sales) that are detailed in the attached Case Study. Wanting to cut bedding costs and simplify manure management, this dairy has successfully installed a FAN Bedding Recovery Unit and is using fiber bedding exclusively with good results. The system is highly automated and requires very little time for maintenance and operation.
