Trident TNZ LLC – MD Press for Sludge Dewatering

Trident's Biosolids Dewatering & Nutrient Recovery Expertise - Your Advantage

About the Company:

Trident TNZ LLC. is an integrated resource recovery company located in Missouri with proprietary technologies for processing livestock waste, wastewater and sludge. As an expert in integrated nutrient and bedding recovery applications in the agricultural sector, Trident provides its customers proven and reliable technologies that process their waste streams into valuable co-products, creating cost savings and new revenue opportunities for the user. Trident offers standalone equipment and fully integrated turn-key systems, including consulting, process design, automation and maintenance.

About the Solution:

The Trident Moving Disc (MD) Press is designed to overcome the limitations of a conventional screw press dewatering unit, such as ineffective dehydration or increased maintenance. The key to the Trident MD Press dewatering process is the “dewatering cylinder”. This cylinder is designed to achieve thickening and pressing (dewatering) in a single integrated operation. The MD Press can take sludge as dilute as 0.1% solids directly from a treatment process, including and oxidation ditch or clarifier, and produce high solids cake. Separate thickening, storage and conditioning processes are eliminated. In addition, required operator attendance, power consumption and water use for operational wash-down are significantly reduced.

The Trident MD Press accepts a wide range of sludge types, including sludge from municipal sewage treatment. It is especially useful when processing sludge with high oil and fat content (FOGS) that would bin

d filter materials and clog the process. Prior to the dewatering cylinder, the raw sludge is fed into a mixing tank where a polymer is thoroughly mixed. The sludge then passes through a flocculation tank where gentle mixing and flocculation occurs. From there, the sludge is channeled into the dewatering cylinder for pressing. The entire operation is controlled by the Trident MD Press control panel.

The Trident MD Press is designed to be a fully automated system capable of starting up, operating and shutting down with no operator intervention. In addition to controlling the Trident MD Dewatering System itself, the control panel is designed to automate the polymer feed system, the unit’s sludge feed pump, as well as any conveyors required to remove dewatered cake. In addition, unit operating and alarm outputs for integration with the plant’s PLC/SCADA system are provided.

Unlike traditional screw presses, the Trident MD Press is designed with a slow-speed, low wear screw that is located inside a multi disc cylinder assembly. This cylinder consists of fixed and moving discs which are held in place on tie rods and separated by thin spacers. The moving rings are gently moved by the rotating screw resulting in a self-cleaning effect that helps prevent clogging.

The MD Press cylinder assembly provides thickening (in the first section) and dewatering (in the second section) in a single process. Depending on the project requirements and plant process the filtrate and pressate can be collected separately or combined.

Solution Strengths, Weaknesses and Critical Indicators

Chemical flocculation technologies remove the non-dissolved particles from the waste stream typically resulting in irrigation quality “tea water”:

  • Produces a clay like cake which is high in phosphorus and with significant amounts of organic nitrogen.
  • Supported technologies include belt presses, centrifuges, dissolved air flotation systems and others; all requiring flocculants to achieve high rates of solids removal
  • There is significant variation of chemical and energy use depending on site and by technology
  • There is significant variation of operational intensity depending on site and by technology
  • There is significant variation of cost depending on site and by technology
  • Proven technology for nitrogen recovery, phosphorous recovery, storage reduction, GHG reduction, and odor control

Newtrient Comments/Opinions:

The Trident MD Press represents a significant opportunity for dairies to remove fine solids with the use of polymer without extensive systems like Centrifuges, Dissolved Air Floatation Systems or Vibratory Screens. The slow speed of the Moving Disc auger combined with the robust design requires less maintenance than many other types of dewatering and the resulting "tea water" can be used directly for irrigation of crops on fields that may be restricted by phosphorous levels.

At the 2016 EPA Nutrient Recycling Challenge Trident’s solution was selected as a Top 10 technology. In 2018, Trident Processes Inc. received the Canadian Business Excellence Award in recognition of their demonstrated achievement of their strategic plans and business goals.
