Vanguard Renewables – Anaerobic Digester Developer

Organics to Energy Lifecycle

About the Company:

Vanguard Renewables develops, constructs, owns, and operates farm-based anaerobic digester systems (AD’s). Based in Wellesley, Massachusetts, Vanguard’s goal is to place AD’s on farms across North America. The organics to energy lifecycle solves the organics waste disposal challenges of American business and the farms, while it generates renewable energy and provides fertilizer to increase local food production and clean water for farm use.

About the Solution:

The Vanguard Renewables solves organic waste disposal challenges and supports the American Farmer. Their scalable, closed-loop anaerobic digestion process converts the energy potential in farm and food waste into Renewable Electricity or Renewable Natural Gas. They strive to be the premier farm-based anaerobic digestion plant owner/operator in the United States committed to Table to Farm renewable energy production. Food waste producers get a safe, clean, and certifiable food waste solution. The anaerobic digester sustains farms with a 15-20 percent bottom line increase. The system eliminates greenhouse gas emissions and groundwater contamination from manure and provides low-cost energy, organic fertilizer, and free heat and hot water to the farm.

Solution Strengths, Weaknesses and Critical Indicators

Anaerobic Digester Associated Technology:

NOTE: There are several technology types that are used as part of an integrated manure management system that includes an anaerobic digester and are not applicable to manure management in other cases. The impact of these technologies on the critical indicators are represented as those of an entire anaerobic digester system.

  • Long usable life and can be run reliably
  • Creates energy and generates environmental credits
  • Requires proper preparation of the feedstock
  • Requires other technologies for energy utilization
  • Requires other technologies for digestate handling
  • Proper feeding & system monitoring is required to avoid system downtime
  • Proven technology for odor control, GHG reduction and pathogen reduction

Newtrient Comments/Opinions:

Vanguard Renewables is a North American project developer that uses dairy manure as the base for mixed waste digesters that take a significant amount of food waste and other organic substrates. They currently have three operational projects as well as several other projects under development. They are concentrating on mid-sized dairy operations that are strategically located and with sufficient crop land available for the proper utilization of the nutrients that are recovered. They have a proven track record of successful operation and reliable performance from their systems.

The Vanguard Renewables model is a shared ownership structure between the organic waste generators, the developer and the dairy. The systems utilize proven technology with established capital and operating costs. Vanguard brings value to its stakeholders and the community in the form of profitable waste to energy projects with beneficial use of the recovered nutrients.

Vanguard has demonstrated a willingness to share information with Newtrient and the community. This is a successful model for waste to energy projects where utility prices and waste diversion regulations create a positive market for anaerobic digestion projects.

Vanguard was the winner of the American Biogas Council Biogas 2016 Project of the Year.
