Struvia™ sustainable recycling of phosphorus from wastewater
Effluent containing high concentrations of phosphorus, for example centrates generated from digested sludge dewatering, are fed to a continuous stirred tank reactor where rapid mixing is achieved using a special mixing system: Turbomix™. Struvite precipitation is initiated by increasing the pH and by addition of a magnesium salt. An integrated lamella settler ensures the separation of the produced struvite prills and the treated effluent. Typically in municipal applications the treated effluent is returned to the head of the treatment works. For industrial applications Struvia is applied on the waterline. The effluent can be discharged directly or further treated if required. The struvite prills are then pumped and directed to a draining and storage facility before they are sent to the packaging unit.
Technology Strengths, Weaknesses and Critical Indicators
Struvite, also known as Magnesium Ammonium Phosphate (MAP) is a slow-release phosphorus-rich product with the following attributes:
- Produced by treating dairy wastewater with chemicals
- Proven chemical process for municipal wastewater treatment
- Advanced phosphorus recovery systems for treating dairy manure typically cost more than those for other animal manures
- All advanced phosphorus recovery systems increase the cost of treating dairy manure over that of conventional treatment
- Effective in removing a high percentage of phosphorus when used with proper chemical treatment
- Value of technology will be based on the marketability of the finished product
- Proven technology for nitrogen recovery, phosphorous recovery, and pathogen reduction
Violia has a long track record of manufacturing reliable water treatment equipment and is currently working with Newtrient to provide additional information on its technology and installations.
The Struvia technology has not been evaluated using Newtrient's 9-point scoring process because, although their process appears to be suited for use on dairy manure, Newtrient is not aware of any current dairy based projects in North America. Newtrient will continue to work with Violia to refine the cost and performance information as it comes in with new commercial dairy installations.
