WAMGROUP – SEPCOM Micro-filters

About the Company:

WAMGROUP is the global market leader in Screw Conveyors and amongst the most prominent players in the field of Bulk Solids Handling & Processing Equipment. The company founded in Modena, Italy, in 1968, employs some 2,500 people at more than 60 locations in 40 countries.

The WAMGROUP logo combines a number of brands. Each one represents different lines of products. The Company’s comprehensive product range includes equipment for Bulk Solids Handling & Processing, Dust Filtration, Wastewater Treatment and Renewable Energy Generation. Two of their brands include SEPCOM and CHIOR, which offer advanced solutions through a comprehensive range of machines and accessories for livestock manure treatment and digestate in biogas production. The CHIOR brand the Group offers a comprehensive range of submersible pumps and agitators. While the SEPCOM brand stands for innovative, industrially designed and manufactured machines and equipment for solids-liquid separation technology.

About the Solution:

SEPCOM Micro-filters are WAMGROUP’s solution for the enhancement of the liquid phase of biogas digestate, as well as pig and cattle manure downstream of the main screw press separator.

The SEPCOM Micro-filter MFT is a machine for the micro-filtration of slurries from a previous separation process of digestate from biogas generating processes or industrial wastewater. It can be applied in all water purification processes.

The SEPCOM Micro-filter MFT consists of a motor drive, which drives a tool producing internally the force required for micro-filtration, and by a screen retaining the solid phase, which is expelled through the top of the machine. The material to be treated is introduced in the lower part. The intensity of the pumping effect is used to increase separation efficiency. SEPCOM Micro-Filter MFT is particularly specialized for pre-separated liquid treatment.

The SEPCOM Micro-filter MFT consists of a micro-filtering system used for pretreatment upstream of a centrifuge. In some cases it can be even used as an alternative to the centrifuge. The micro-filtered liquid can be used for fertigation or in systems that reuse the liquid to dilute the dry matter fed into anaerobic digesters in biogas plants.

Solution Strengths, Weaknesses and Critical Indicators

Fine solids separation technologies remove fine, non-dissolved particles from the waste stream, typically producing a low-solid liquid suitable for irrigation or further treatment, often referred to as “tea water”:

  • Produces a stackable solid or clay-like cake high in phosphorus and containing significant amounts of organic nitrogen.
  • Technologies include centrifuges, chemical flocculation systems (e.g., dissolved air flotation, belt presses), and advanced filtration systems, with performance often enhanced by polymer or coagulant use.
  • Significant variation in energy use, chemical requirements, and operational intensity depending on site conditions, technology type, and polymer usage.
  • Significant variation in cost depending on site, technology, and chemical inputs.
  • Proven technology for phosphorus recovery, nitrogen partitioning, storage volume reduction, greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction, and odor control.
  • Performance is generally improved with the use of polymers or coagulants, though this increases operating costs.

Newtrient Comments/Opinions:

WAMGROUP has recently been added to the Newtrient catalog. Newtrient will continue to work with WAMGROUP to further refine the cost and performance information on their solution. Newtrient will update this entry as more information becomes available and as new commercial dairy installations come online.
