XACT Systems – Composting Systems

In Vessel Composting System for Accelerated Composting

About the Company:

The XACT Systems composting equipment, BioReactor, was developed over a decade ago as a result of the growing and tremendous challenge of handling larger and larger volumes of solid organic waste on farms (cow manure, horse manure, poultry litter, and spoiled feed).  In addition, legislative demands placed upon farming operations to dispose of manure and other organic wastes in a more environmentally responsible way has increased the need for better solid organic waste management strategies.

XACT feels their in-vessel composter offers the best solution because it will meet the needs of operation’s for a system that is fast and effective, has a low labor requirement, is built like a battle ship, requires very little land, controls odors and leachate, and kills pathogens and viruses. It’s simple, robust design is durable yet affordable and significantly decomposes solid organics in as little as 3 to 7 days.

XACT Systems markets the BioReactor throughout Canada, the USA and around the world and has over 35 years’ experience in material handling for industry and agriculture.

About the Solution:

The XACT BioReactors are large scale in-vessel composters that convert huge volumes of solid organic waste into compost in as little as 3 to 7 days. Additionally, XACT is offering designer microbial additives which can target specific bacteria. For example, somatic cell count in the dairy industry is a major concern, but the new microbial additive introduced into the composting process defends against high somatic cell counts. The XACT BioReactor is available in 5’ to 10’ diameters and in lengths from 10’ to 60’. Although it is a simple design, it is built to heavy-duty standards in order to withstand the rigors of turning tons and tons of material 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.

For example, when fully loaded, a 10’ x 60’ long BioReactor is turning 75 tons of waste up to 240 times per day.

Engineering

  • Carbon Steel Walls (up to 5/8” thick)
  • Solid Steel Wheels
  • Heavy Duty Mounting Frames
  • Interior Liner Rings
  • Negative Ventilation System for Process and Odor Control
  • Foam Insulation for 24/7/365 Temperature Control
  • Automated Discharge Auger or Door The BioReactor in-vessel composter is driven by surprisingly low hp motors. The size of motors depends on the size of the vessel, but the motor sizes ranges from 5 to 10 hp. Note that the ends of the BioReactor are fixed and only the cylinder rotates.

There are no temperamental interior plungers, fins or paddles. The organic material simply moves along the vessel as it decomposes and becomes lighter and fluffier.

  • Offers tremendous throughput
  • Saves labor
  • Requires minimal land

There are 3 unique features that set the BioReactor Composting System apart from the competition. The first is the fixed ends design, which allows the XACT drum to be filled to 70% capacity whereas the competitors’ drums, which the entire drum rotates, can only be filled to 50% capacity. The second is the soft touch screen with software on the control panel, which optimizes processing factors. The third is the phenomenal ease and speed of installation due to the BioReactor’s modular design. For example, a 3m diameter x 18m long BioReactor that weights 35,380 kg. can installed in just 4 hours and requires only 8 bolts to be tightened.

Successful accelerated decomposition time is the biggest advantage the BioReactor has over traditional methods (windrows or static piles). With the BioReactor, manure can be as little as 3 days (resulting in a 75% maturity rating).  Compare this to traditional methods (windrows or static piles) that can take 90 to 120 days.

After a 4-day retention period in the BioReactor, the discharged compost is pathogen free (salmonella and e-coli bacteria had been destroyed), weed seed free, insect larvae free, and odorless.  The finished compost is about 50% moisture, light and fluffy, and has a maturity rating of 75%.

At this point, the compost can be used for bedding the herd and cows love it as it provides exceptional comfort. Also, the compost can be land applied because it is an excellent soil amendment. Lastly, the compost quality is such that it is a valuable product that can be sold thus providing additional revenue for the farm.
