Agrilab Technologies, Inc. – Compost Aeration and Heat Recovery

Efficient Composting Systems

About the Company:

Agrilab Technologies, Inc. (AGT) is a Vermont-based company with a proprietary compost aeration and heat recovery (CAHR) technology that has been successfully used on livestock farms since 2006. Other products include aeration and drying systems, nutrient recovery, and specialized farm equipment. The team provides design, development, installation and operating support services to complement its line of modular equipment. The products and services save farms labor, space, and energy while reducing odors and producing compost products. The company’s clients include dairy farms, commercial and municipal composters, and institutions.

About the Solution:

Agrilab Technologies Inc. standard products include the AGT Compost Hot Skid, Hot Box, Drum Dragon, Dryer and AerSkid units. This technology incorporates aeration to accelerate the composting process for manure, bedding, forest residuals, food scraps and other biomass. AGT equipment is modular to meet a range of scales and applications. On-site and remote data acquisition and automated controls reduce labor, optimize the composting process and end-product quality while specialized heat exchangers recover thermal energy for facility heating, material drying, and process water demands. Vapor recirculation features extend wintertime operations, enable bedding or other material drying and management of multiple compost batches. Their Hot Box technology comes in two sizes, the smaller Hot Box 250, and the larger Hot Box 1000. The Hot Skid line is suited for indoor use or the AGT Compost Hot Box series are mounted in an insulated shipping container.

Newtrient Comments/Opinions:

Agrilab Technologies Inc. offers an innovative solution for capturing heat, carbon dioxide, and ammonia from aerated, turned, or static compost piles, suitable for integration with existing greenhouse or composting operations. This technology is already operational on several dairy farms in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts.

Newtrient conducted a review of this technology in late 2021, supported by USDA NRCS Conservation Innovation Grant funding. Data from a commercial installation at Vermont Natural Ag Products, Inc. (VNAP), a subsidiary of Foster Brothers Farm, Inc. in Middlebury, Vermont, is available as an Expert Evaluation report on this page. Sampling and analysis were conducted by the University of Vermont as part of the grant.

Additionally, Agrilab Technologies Inc. has received USDA REAP funding for projects in three states. They specialize in offering aeration-only units to farmers and other clients, with their compost aeration and heat recovery (CAHR) systems featuring a renewable energy component. These systems have proven effective in improving manure management, saving labor and space, and producing end-products with reduced pathogens and weed seeds. Agrilab Technologies Inc.'s aeration-only systems are eligible for NRCS 317 Practice - Compost System cost-sharing. They collaborate closely with clients and USDA staff during the conceptual design stage, addressing process, structural, and civil engineering requirements.
