E-Finity Distributed Generation – MicroTurbine Generators

Capstone MicroTurbine Distributor

About the Company:

E-Finity Distributed Generation is the exclusive Mid-Atlantic and Southeast distributor for Capstone Turbine. Capstone Turbine is the world’s leading developer and manufacturer of clean-and-green microturbine power generation systems and was first to market with its high efficiency air bearing turbine technology. Capstone has shipped more than 9,000 microturbines to customers worldwide. Their innovative and award-winning systems have logged millions of documented runtime operating hours and are compliant with current and future emissions regulations.

E-Finity sells and services Capstone Technology and is an active member of the distributed generation and combined heat (CHP) and power industry. The company actively promotes onsite energy efficient power solutions with Capstone microturbine technology. By providing conceptual design, application engineering support, site integration, and startup with ongoing maintenance, E-Finity ensures that the onsite, CHP, CCHP, or oil and gas power system will operate at peak performance. Capstone turbines are providing customers with power independence for commercial and industrial, resource recovery, and oil and gas applications. In commercial and industrial applications, Capstone microturbines provide hot water, chilled water, and steam to various facilities such as hotels, healthcare, and manufacturing facilities, data centers, and office buildings. In transmission, exploration and midstream operations, the microturbines are providing power to the remote areas of the Utica and Marcellus Shale, ensuring that gas producers have reliable power for the productions of natural gas.

Located in Wayne, PA and with offices and services hubs in West Virginia, Florida, and Washington, DC, E-Finity maintains over 600 microturbines throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern United States, including Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ohio, Delaware, New Jersey, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. The company maintains a dedicated staff of application engineers, sales and marketing, customer service, and Capstone Certified Technicians that are located throughout its territory.

About the Solution:

Capstone Turbine Corporation® is the world’s leading producer of low-emission MicroTurbine systems, and was the first to market with commercially viable MicroTurbine energy products.  With thousands of MicroTurbine systems shipped to customers worldwide, and millions of operating hours, Capstone continues to successfully provide solutions to customer’s energy needs.

Capstone MicroTurbine solutions help improve operations by putting them in control of their own energy costs.  Advanced engineering and more than 100 patents put the Capstone MicroTurbines in a class of their own.  By integrating an aero-based turbine engine, a magnetic generator, advanced power electronics, and air bearings technology, Capstone MicroTurbines are an ideal solution to today’s distributed generation needs.

Capstone MicroTurbines have just one moving part, no gearbox or other mechanical wear points, and use no lubricants or hazardous materials, resulting in minimal maintenance while providing reliable, dependable performance.  Capstone MicroTurbines can operate on a variety of gaseous or liquid fuels and emit very low emissions, making Capstone a clean, green, reliable source of energy. The MicroTurbines can be installed individually or multi-packed and can function in parallel or independent from the grid.  Our MicroTurbines are compact, lightweight, affordable, quiet, and provide a robust and reliable solution to your energy needs.

Capstone MicroTurbines cleanly burn waste gases to create renewable power and heat. This feature replaces the traditional solution of flaring those gases, or even worse, letting them vent into the air – a practice that is wasteful, polluting, and contributes regularly to climate change. With the use of an anaerobic digester, Capstone microturbines are able to cleanly and effectively run on methane gas from landfills, wastewater treatment facilities and food processing facilities, as well as agriculture waste. Rather than simply venting or flaring the methane gas, Capstone microturbines can convert this free fuel to clean and reliable electricity for use at the site or surrounding areas. Capstone offers its "CR" (Capstone Renewable) line of microturbines specifically designed to operate on waste gas fuels.

Solution Strengths, Weaknesses and Critical Indicators

Anaerobic Digester Associated Technology:

NOTE: There are several technology types that are used as part of an integrated manure management system that includes an anaerobic digester and are not applicable to manure management in other cases. The impact of these technologies on the critical indicators are represented as those of an entire anaerobic digester system.

  • Long usable life and can be run reliably
  • Creates energy and generates environmental credits
  • Requires proper preparation of the feedstock
  • Requires other technologies for energy utilization
  • Requires other technologies for digestate handling
  • Proper feeding & system monitoring is required to avoid system downtime
  • Proven technology for odor control, GHG reduction and pathogen reduction

Newtrient Comments/Opinions:

E-Finity Distributed Generation is the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast distributor for Capstone Turbine. This technology has been used on dairy digester gas in the U.S. in the past, installed by another distributor, but based on Newtrient's information the system is currently not operating. The turbine technology itself was not the primary issue, but there were multiple problems with the electronics which resulted in limited run time and excessive downtime on the system. The turbines are capable of handling hydrogen sulfide but an important consideration in the installation of the system is that the other components (i.e. blowers and filters) must also be capable of handling hydrogen sulfide as well.

Because there are no North American installations at this time the Capstone MicroTurbine has not been evaluated for a 9-Point Score. Newtrient will continue to work with E-Finity Distributed Generation to collect cost and performance information if new commercial dairy installations come on line.
