Epcon MVR – Evaporation

Energy efficient evaporation plants for product concentration and wastewater treatment.

About the Company:

With roots back in the Norwegian dairy industry, EPCON delivered its first MVR evaporation plant in the mid 80s. EPCON’s constantly evolving technology and experience have made EPCON a leading expert in MVR evaporation.

About the Solution:

The EPCON MVR evaporator only uses 8-40 kWh per ton evaporated water. This is a reduction of up to 99% compared to a 1 effect steam driven evaporator. MVR or Mechanical Vapor Re-compression (also known as MVC) is a technology where the vapor is compressed in a fan or a compressor to a higher temperature and pressure. This compressed vapor is then used as energy source instead of boiler steam. Most of the products delivered by EPCON are based on MVR technology. EPCON has 30 years experience with MVR technology.

Solution Strengths, Weaknesses and Critical Indicators

Evaporation Technologies:

  • Use heat to produce either manure with less water or dried manure solids
  • Reduce water in manure using a series of evaporators or recompressed process generated steam to evaporate water from liquid slurries—energy is supplied either by purchased fuel and/or waste heat from other processes
  • Systems that dry separated solids use either a belt or drum to evaporate water from separated solids—energy is supplied either by purchased fuel, electricity and/or waste heat from other processes
  • Compounds are released as the water is driven off (i.e. ammonia, hydrogen sulfide), this often requires additional treatment such as condensation of the water and/or scrubbing of the chemicals
  • Requires purchased energy and costs are a significant concern leading to a trade-off between input costs and gains in liquid concentration and transportation/market of by-products
  • Proven technology for nitrogen recovery, phosphorous recovery, storage reduction, GHG reduction, odor control and pathogen reduction

Newtrient Comments/Opinions:

Evaporation and Drying Technologies:

  • Uses heat to produce either manure with less water or dried manure solids
  • Systems that reduce water in manure use a series of evaporators to sequentially evaporate water from liquid slurries—energy is supplied either by purchased fuel and/or waste heat from other processes
  • Systems that dry separated solids use either a belt or drum to evaporate water from separated solids—energy is supplied either by purchased fuel, electricity and/or waste heat from other processes
  • Chemicals are released with the water (i.e. ammonia, hydrogen sulfide), and this often requires additional treatment such as condensation of the water and/or scrubbing of the chemicals
  • The requirement for purchased energy and costs are a significant concern leading to a tradeoff between input costs and gains in liquid concentration and transportation/market of by-products
