Green Steel Environmental – Green Steel PSR

About the Company:

Green Steel Environmental is a producer of upcycled, cleantech additives for the wastewater treatment industry. Green Steel’s mission is to help wastewater treatment operators expand their efforts to drive up sustainability and drive down costs. To this end, they have developed Green Steel PSR™, a solution engineered to help operators manage the removal of phosphorus and sulfur – before it converts to H₂S – in a more sustainable, cost-effective, and safe manner than conventional chemical treatment. Green Steel PSR™ is the result of years of research, testing, and collaboration with the University of Colorado.

About the Solution:

Green Steel PSR™ is an up-cycled, iron-rich material produced from a byproduct of steel manufacturing. Engineered for use in wastewater treatment, Green Steel PSR™ provides an effective and environmentally beneficial method to remove phosphorus and sulfur from wastewater.

Green Steel PSR™ can be added to either primary or secondary clarifiers as a slurry or dry granule. It flows seamlessly into anaerobic digesters, where it begins working within hours. In typical operating conditions, over 80% of phosphates and sulfides are sequestered into the biosolids – without requiring substantial investment or changes to standard operating procedures

Green Steel PSR™ contains iron, calcium, and magnesium oxides, minerals known to successfully bind with phosphates. Green Steel PSR™ captures phosphorus through sorption to form stable, insoluble phosphates. This dual mechanism removes up to 80% of soluble phosphate from digester sludge at typical dosing levels, comparable to common treatment chemicals – but without the environmental and workplace-safety drawbacks.

Green Steel PSR™ also captures sulfides through sorption to form stable insoluble sulfates. At a steady-state dose, pilot studies showed up to 80% reduction in H2S levels in digester biogas – substantially improving value and safety for energy recovery. Green Steel PSR™ reduces the scrubbing of H2S to a polishing level. This also diminishes wear and corrosion of scrubbing infrastructure, in addition to fewer scrubbing media changeouts.
