About the Solution:

Modular Plant Technology Tailored to Individual Circumstances and Performance Requirements

HZI BioMethan delivers gas upgrading facilities that can also be built as an expansion of existing plants. They treat and upgrade biogenic gases such as biogas, sewage and landfill gas, as well as flue gases. Depending on their infrastructure, operators can choose between a physical and chemical process. We also offer optional technologies to enable the upgraded gases to be processed further.

Amine Scrubbing

Heat-driven process for separating carbon dioxide

HZI delivers first-class gas upgrading systems based on pressure less chemical amine scrubbing, a particularly efficient and reliable heat-driven process. High-quality scrubbing fluid ensures process stability and plant efficiency, resulting in exceptionally high system performance and availability.

 Characteristics of amine scrubbing:
  • Operates with any waste heat source
  • Methane purity of up to 99.5% vol
  • Minimal methane slip (max. 0.1% vol)
  • High product gas purity means the gas can be injected into any natural gas grid
  • Robust plant design for greater biogas quantity
Membrane Technology

Pressure-driven process for separating carbon dioxide

To enable our customers to choose the process that best suits their needs, we also offer membrane technology – a pressure-driven process for upgrading biogas – in addition to amine scrubbing. Here the carbon dioxide is separated using membranes made from high-performance polyamides, specially designed by Evonik for upgrading facilities, and offering high permeability and selectivity.

Characteristics of membrane technology:
  • Optimized treatment system thanks to individualized membrane concepts
  • Methane purity of up to 98 % thanks to above-average CO2 and methane selectivity
  • Methane slip reduced to below 0.5 % vol thanks to the three-stage design of the membrane modules
  • Plant control system easily adjustable if volume flows and gas composition change

Anaerobic Digester Associated Technology:

NOTE: There are several technology types that are used as part of an integrated manure management system that includes an anaerobic digester and are not applicable to manure management in other cases. The impact of these technologies on the critical indicators are represented as those of an entire anaerobic digester system.

Biogas upgrading technology:

  • Produces renewable natural gas (RNG) by removing carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen, oxygen and water vapor from biogas
  • Includes technologies such as membrane separation, pressure swing absorption and water scrubbing
  • Used to treat biogas from an anaerobic digester
  • Most systems are technically complex
  • Interconnection to the national gas infrastructure typically requires large systems and proximity to large volume gas lines
HZI has not been evaluated using Newtrient's 9-point scoring process because, although their process appears to be suited for use on dairy manure, Newtrient is not aware of any current dairy based projects.

Newtrient will continue to work with HZI to further refine the cost and performance information as more information becomes available and as new commercial dairy installations come on line.
