McLanahan Corporation – Rotary Screens

Agricultural

About the Company:

McLanahan Corporation provides complete manure management solutions for the agricultural industry. McLanahan’s custom engineered systems help dairies minimize the challenges of manure handling with safer, simpler and smarter solutions.

About the Solution:

The RDS operates on the principle of size-based separation—that is, liquids pass through a screen and solids (fibers) of a size larger than the screen aperture are retained. Rotary drum, size-based separation is technology is recognized in industries such as mining and food processing as a reliable means to separate solids from slurry.

Solution Strengths, Weaknesses and Critical Indicators

Rotary screen technologies:

  • Produces fiber for bedding, soil amendment and compost
  • Used extensively on dairies across the country to reduce concerns associated with storage and application
  • Does not significantly reduce nutrients from the manure stream
  • Can utilize many types of technology like slope screen, screw press, rotary drum and others
  • Used before many other technologies to remove coarse solids
  • Minimal maintenance and operator time required
  • Proven technology for nitrogen recovery, phosphorous recovery, storage reduction, GHG reduction, and odor control but with limited impact in all cases

Newtrient Comments/Opinions:

Coarse solids separation technologies:

  • Produces fiber for bedding, soil amendment and compost
  • Used extensively on dairies across the country to reduce storage and application concerns
  • Does not significantly reduce nutrients from the manure stream
  • Can utilize many types of technology like slope screen, screw press, rotary drum and others
  • Used before many other technologies to remove coarse solids
  • Minimal maintenance and operator time required
McLanahan Corporation’s Rotary Screen separators can be used to perform primary solid-liquid separation for manure from organically bedded freestalls or as part of their closed-loop sand-manure separation system.  Rotary drum separators, by their nature, produce relatively “wet” solids but when a farmer needs to have a drier solid product, McLanahan offers a roller press separator as a secondary separation step to squeeze out moisture from the solids.  Rotary Screen separators have a low energy demand and work best when they are continuously used; some wash water is used to keep solids from building up on the screens.

Newtrient will continue to work with McLahan to further refine the cost and performance information as more information comes in with new commercial dairy installations.
