Novozymes – Custom Enzyme Solutions

Rethink Tomorrow

Company Description:

Novozymes is a world leader in biological solutions, providing enzyme blends to customers in more than 40 industries. Based on an extensive portfolio, they can provide the right enzymatic blend for any biogas plant’s substrate mix, whether the plant processes food waste, manure, municipal or industrial wastewater, or ag residuals.

Novozymes’ custom enzyme solutions help to breakdown organic feedstock more quickly, allowing for more throughput in the system, higher biogas yields, and reduced operational costs and downtime. The enzymes have also proven to significantly reduce foaming and crust formation within the digester. With very little if any CAPEX costs needed to use enzymes, and the high value of biogas and RNG at present, the time is right to explore this opportunity. Novozymes is already present in the U.S. with more than 1,200 employees across eight states.

Novozymes is part of a Biogas Alliance led by the Danish Trade Council in North America.

Technology Description:

The Novozymes biogas enzyme toolbox draws on an extensive portfolio of enzymes. That’s is how they strive to get the right enzymatic blends for your plant’s substrate mix. Whether your plant processes residues from agriculture, food production, wastewater or sewage, Novozymes wants to help boost its profitability with their custom solutions. Biogas from agricultural and industrial residues - By more efficiently degrading organic material Novozymes enzymes can deliver a range of benefits. Along with higher biogas yields, they allow you to reduce operational costs and downtime. They also boost your working volume and help prevent the formation of hard crusts on your digester. Biogas from wastewater & sewage sludge - In wastewater plants, their solutions reduce Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and improve process stability. That helps your plant stay in compliance. Municipal wastewater plants can also use our solutions to reduce sludge volumes for lower disposal costs. Whether you operate an industrial or a municipal wastewater plant, their BG Max™ solutions significantly increase biogas production. Biogas from food waste - By increasing the solubility of food waste substrates, Novozymes solutions deliver a range of benefits. They allow higher concentrations of organic content through your digester, boosting your capacity. They also cut digestate volumes for lower disposal costs. Higher substrate solubility can also reduce residual organic material in your reject stream. That means you can lower costs by pushing lower volumes of reject material through to disposal.

Technology Strengths, Weaknesses and Critical Indicators

Anaerobic Digester Associated Technology:

NOTE: There are several technology types that are used as part of an integrated manure management system that includes an anaerobic digester and are not applicable to manure management in other cases. The impact of these technologies on the critical indicators are represented as those of an entire anaerobic digester system.

  • Long usable life and can be run reliably
  • Creates energy and generates environmental credits
  • Requires proper preparation of the feedstock
  • Requires other technologies for energy utilization
  • Requires other technologies for digestate handling
  • Proper feeding & system monitoring is required to avoid system downtime
  • Proven technology for odor control, GHG reduction and pathogen reduction

Newtrient Comments/Opinions:

Novozymes has not been evaluated using Newtrient's 9-point scoring process because they are just beginning to market their biogas additives in North America at this time. Novozymes is interested in entering U.S. markets and is being assisted by the Danish Trade Council.   Newtrient will continue to work with Novozymes and the Danish Trade Council to provide more information on this technology as it becomes available.
