Qnergy – PowerGen 5650

Reliable Remote Power From Methane

About the Company:

Qnergy provides a novel external combustion engine that converts raw biogas into electricity and recoverable heat. Their unique design has no rotary parts, no lubrication, and no required maintenance for 80,000 hours (9 years), making it ideal as generator that can provide heat and electricity from raw biogas.

About the Solution:

Qnergy’s Free Piston Stirling Engine is 3rd party tested to provide 100% methane destruction and a GHG emissions profile >10X better than EPA standards. It’s linear motor design has no rotating parts and no lubricants. Rated for 80,000 hours of continuous service with no required scheduled maintenance. The PowerGen can be used singly or in tandem to deliver reliable heat and power from biogas.

The PowerGen 5650 combusts raw biogas, requiring no scrubbing or cleaning, to deliver 5.65kW of utility grade electricity and depending on configuration 20+ kW of useful heat. This makes the engine ideal for running or boosting (depending on size) the performance of thermophilic anaerobic biodigesters.

The Low OpEx engine generator has a highly favorable GHG footprint and can successfully combust raw biogas and deliver utility grade electricity and heat as required. The PowerGen 5650 replaces polluting internal combustion engines which require high levels of routine maintenance, annual overhaul, and replacement due to impurities such as H2S present in biogas. Power can be used for onsite operations or sold as renewable electricity and recovered heat used for operations to reduce energy costs.

Qnergy provides service contracts for maintenance and parts replacement as desired by customers.

Qnergy is currently piloting the PowerGen 5650, if you are interested in becoming a pilot partner with Qnergy you may contact them directly through the provided contact information.

Solution Strengths, Weaknesses and Critical Indicators

Anaerobic Digester Associated Technology:

NOTE: There are several technology types that are used as part of an integrated manure management system that includes an anaerobic digester and are not applicable to manure management in other cases. The impact of these technologies on the critical indicators are represented as those of an entire anaerobic digester system.

  • Long usable life and can be run reliably
  • Creates energy and generates environmental credits
  • Requires proper preparation of the feedstock
  • Requires other technologies for energy utilization
  • Requires other technologies for digestate handling
  • Proper feeding & system monitoring is required to avoid system downtime
  • Proven technology for odor control, GHG reduction and pathogen reduction
