In combination with entrepreneurship, professionalism and integrity, Sustec offers their customers a wide range of solutions resulting in reliable and excellent projects/services.

About the Solution:

The Nutritec® is a unique technology to recover nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater by struvite precipitation followed by membrane ammonia stripping resulting in ammonium sulfate. The Nutritec technology can be used to recover nutrients from reject water, concentrated industrial wastewater, or even separately collected urine. Phosphate is recovered via struvite precipitation which occurs is a special designed crystallization reactor. Ammonium is recovered via a membrane stripping process that captures ammonia in a sulfuric acid solution to produce ammonium sulfate. Benefits of this process are its compactness and little energy demand. Both struvite and ammonium sulfate can be used as fertilizers.

Solution Strengths, Weaknesses and Critical Indicators

Ammonia-N can be harvested from manure and digestate using proven chemical/thermal processes:

  • Produces a concentrated source of nitrogen from a renewable source
  • Requires pre-treatment to remove coarse and fine solids
  • Pairs well with anaerobic digesters because digesters convert organic N into ammonium
  • Chemical storage required for process chemicals and final product
  •  Proven technology for nitrogen recovery, odor control, and pathogen reduction

Newtrient Comments/Opinions:

Ammonia-N can be harvested from manure using proven chemical/thermal processes.

  • Produces a concentrated source of nitrogen from a renewable source
  • Requires pre-treatment to remove coarse and fine solids
  • Pairs well with anaerobic digesters because digesters make more ammonia available
  • Chemical storage required for process chemicals and final product
Sustec has not been evaluated using Newtrient's 9-point scoring process because, although their process appears to be suited for use on dairy manure, Newtrient is not aware of any current dairy based projects in North America. Newtrient will continue to work with Sustec to refine the cost and performance information as it comes in with new commercial dairy installations.
