TC Energy – RNG Transportation & Interconnects
About the Company:
TC Energy is more than a pipeline company. Approximately 7,300 people strong, TC Energy is a vital part of modern life. Thanks to a safe, stable network of natural gas and crude oil pipelines, along with nuclear power facilities, wherever life happens — TC Energy is there.
Whether it’s renewable energy, renewable natural gas, hydrogen or other low carbon energy services, TC Energy utilizes their continental presence to offer their customers flexible, cost-effective solutions to manage their energy and decarbonization needs. TC Energy aims to leverage the size and scale of their energy network and trading platform to be the premier source of low carbon energy for the North American industrial, natural gas and oil sectors.
TC Energy’s areas of expertise:
Energy Efficiency: Replace aging thermal systems with efficient steam cogeneration
Renewable Power: Switch to renewable power for existing and future electric systems
Green Feedstocks: Offset hydrocarbon feedstocks with renewable natural gas or replace them with hydrogen
Sequestration: Sequester CO2 when hydrocarbon feedstocks must be used
About the Solution:
TC Energy’s U.S. network of 13 pipelines, which stretches over 32,000 miles across 40 states, offers a perfect step for methane capture projects and, thus, reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Most recently, they announced a strategic collaboration with GreenGasUSA to further develop a network of RNG transportation hubs across their USNG footprint to increase renewable gas sources to as many producers and consumers as possible. Gas will be delivered to these hubs, not only by the commonly used lateral or direct connection, but also by way of compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks. This allows for multiple users to connect to their pipeline network.
These centralized hubs allow for wider and more equitable participation of RNG in energy markets and helps remove many of the traditional obstacles that make it difficult for new companies to enter this type of market. Simply put, TC Energy is enabling cost-effective market access for RNG producers by offering more economic viability and carbon-neutral energy opportunities.
TC Energy currently has 10 RNG interconnects across the USNG system, and plan to rapidly expand and provide more capability. The first hub in collaboration with GreenGasUSA is targeted for in-service in the second quarter of 2023.
Solution Strengths, Weaknesses and Critical Indicators
NOTE: There are multiple technologies that are used as part of integrated manure management systems and yet are not manure management types on their own. The impact of these technologies on their own would be minimal or very difficult to quantify.
General Support & Other:
- Can be an integral part of many manure management systems
- Most projects have at least some equipment that supports operations of the main technology
- This technology is not evaluated on its own, the NEAT Matrix for this technology is neutral unless utilized with other technologies.
TC Energy has recently been added to the Newtrient catalog. Newtrient will continue to work with TC Energy to further refine the cost and performance information on their solutions. Newtrient will update this entry as more information becomes available and as new commercial dairy installations come online.
