About the Solution:
The Trident Wave Separator is a sludge thickener that concentrates dilute sludge. The equipment is typically implemented after primary separation, that removes the large fiber from manure, to process the remaining sludge and separate fine solids. The Wave Separator achieves significant volume reduction which also helps reduce the downstream treatment capacity of sludge dewatering equipment such as the Trident MD Press.
The Wave Separator’s innovative working principle with slow moving concentric discs that gently move the material through the separation surface, ensures a very efficient low-impact separation. Its self-cleaning design eliminates the need for a spray bar or frequent backwash procedures. The equipment is powered by a low-horsepower motor ensuring low operational expenses. The Wave Separator can be operated fully automated 24/7 or in batch mode. The technology is scalable to suite multiple applications and varying volumes of material.
The Wave Separator is well suited for flush dairies with dilute waste streams. The equipment’s compact footprint also makes it a great option for smaller dairies that don’t require the throughput of a DAF or have limited space for their treatment equipment.
Trident’s Wave Separator is a very affordable technology both from a capital cost and an operational perspective. The system can be operated fully automated 24/7 with minimal operator attendance. Low speed, low energy operation reduces operational costs.
Solution Strengths, Weaknesses and Critical Indicators
Chemical flocculation technologies remove the non-dissolved particles from the waste stream typically resulting in irrigation quality “tea water”:
- Produces a clay like cake which is high in phosphorus and with significant amounts of organic nitrogen.
- Supported technologies include belt presses, centrifuges, dissolved air flotation systems and others; all requiring flocculants to achieve high rates of solids removal
- There is significant variation of chemical and energy use depending on site and by technology
- There is significant variation of operational intensity depending on site and by technology

- Proven technology for nitrogen recovery, phosphorous recovery, storage reduction, GHG reduction, and odor control
Trident has a sound history of performance and reliability in manure related technology. They have developed systems of solids separation for application to dairy manure and dairy manure digestate. One of the key selling points for one purchaser was that the system was installed by Trident "on time and at the quoted price".
The Wave Separator is not currently installed at commercial scale on North-American dairies or co-digestion facilities. Trident has supplied Newtrient with considerable data from farm pilots and has discussed the best sites for running this system. The early results are pointing that the Wave Separator may be a successful and robust technology capable of meeting performance expectations in regard to solids, phosphorus, and nitrogen removal while producing a stackable product for dairies with high water content or for smaller operations.
Newtrient will continue to work with Trident to further refine the cost and performance information as more information comes in with the installation of the Wave Separator on a dairy operation.
At the 2016 EPA Nutrient Recycling Challenge Trident’s solution was selected as a Top 10 technology. In 2018, Trident Processes Inc. received the Canadian Business Excellence Award in recognition of their demonstrated achievement of their strategic plans and business goals.
