Unison Solutions – BioCNG Upgrading

About the Company:

Unison Solutions, Inc., founded in 2000, is an industry leader in biogas conditioning, biogas upgrading, BioCNG vehicle fuel systems and distributed generation. Unison systems have been installed around the world at landfills, wastewater treatment facilities (WWTF), dairies and food processing digester plants. Unison has manufactured gas conditioning and compression packages in sizes that range from 20 scfm up to 8,000 scfm. Their expertise in purifying biogas includes hydrogen sulfide removal, siloxane removal, CO2 removal, compression and gas quality monitoring.

To date, Unison has provided over 350 gas conditioning and upgrading systems to the biogas marketplace. Unison has 50 employees including engineers, CAD drafters, PLC programmers, welders, fabricators, electricians and service technicians. Unison Solutions is an ASME certified manufacturing shop specializing in stainless steel tank fabrication and our in‐house, UL 508A panel shop gives us the credibility to design and build custom control panels that meet the specifications of each individual biogas system installation. Unison Solutions is uniquely positioned to provide all facets of a renewable energy project from equipment fabrication to startup and ongoing maintenance support in-house.

About the Solution:

If compression is not required, Unison Solutions can provide the same level of gas conditioning for use with your blower or compressor. Whether you require filtration, condensate removal, or heat transfer, Unison Solutions can build a system for your application. They can also provide passive drying systems for process gases that are not related to biogas. Unison Solutions experience with the heat transfer characteristics of gas mixtures allows us to design a system to meet your specifications.

Solution Strengths, Weaknesses and Critical Indicators

Anaerobic Digester Associated Technology:

NOTE: There are several technology types that are used as part of an integrated manure management system that includes an anaerobic digester and are not applicable to manure management in other cases. The impact of these technologies on the critical indicators are represented as those of an entire anaerobic digester system.

  • Long usable life and can be run reliably
  • Creates energy and generates environmental credits
  • Requires proper preparation of the feedstock
  • Requires other technologies for energy utilization
  • Requires other technologies for digestate handling
  • Proper feeding & system monitoring is required to avoid system downtime
  • Proven technology for odor control, GHG reduction and pathogen reduction

Newtrient Comments/Opinions:

Biogas upgrading technology:

  • Produces renewable natural gas (RNG) by removing carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen, oxygen and water vapor from biogas

  • Includes technologies such as membrane separation, pressure swing absorption and water scrubbing

  • Used to treat biogas from an anaerobic digester

  • Most systems are technically complex

  • Interconnection to the national gas infrastructure typically requires large systems and proximity to large volume gas lines
